Neoclassical Bronze Winged Lion of Saint Mark Venetian Grand Tour C1820

18th century
Description

Exceptional Early 19th Century Neoclassical Bronze Winged Lion of Saint Mark – Venetian Grand Tour Masterpiece

A magnificent early 19th-century (circa 1820) solid bronze sculpture depicting the Winged Lion of Saint Mark, the enduring symbol of Venice and its patron, St. Mark the Evangelist.

Superbly cast with crisp definition and a beautiful, deep natural patina, this rare Neoclassical Grand Tour bronze embodies the strength, wisdom, and serenity of Venice’s ancient guardian. The lion’s noble stance — one paw resting upon the open Gospel — bears the Latin inscription:

“PAX TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA MEUS”

(“Peace to you, Mark, my Evangelist.”)

The sculpture rests upon an ornate rectangular base enriched with Neoclassical scrollwork and acanthus motifs, reflecting the refined artistic sensibilities of early 19th-century Italian craftsmanship. The underside is finished with green baize for surface protection.

Every detail — from the intricate modeling of the mane to the elegant wing feathering — showcases the precision and dignity that define Neoclassical Venetian bronzework.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, European travellers on the Grand Tour collected small bronze scale models of famous Italian monuments and symbols, such as the Venetian Lion of Saint Mark, as educational mementos.

These pieces were traditionally cast in solid bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting methods, then finished with hand-chasing and applied patinas to accentuate surface details.

Period castings feature crisp hand-tooling, hand-cut threaded fixings underneath, and natural surface wear with oxidisation in the recessed crevices.

Position the bronze sculpture atop a stack of books on an office desk, integrate it into a mahogany bookshelf display, or place it on a mantelpiece for historical contrast.

Dust the object regularly with a soft-bristled brush, and occasionally apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax to protect the original patina from humidity.
