Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Empire style emerged in France during the early nineteenth century, drawing inspiration from classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian antiquities. Gueridon tables from this period typically feature heavy cylindrical or tripod pedestals, dark polished woods such as mahogany, polished marble tops, and architectural or animal motifs like ram heads, sphinxes, and claw feet.

Empire gueridons were predominantly constructed using solid wood or heavy veneers of flame mahogany, walnut, or rosewood. Tops were frequently fitted with thick slabs of marble, such as Saint Anne, Carrara, or Belgian Black, supported by carved wood or gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of period craftsmanship, including hand-carved details, hand-cut joinery beneath the apron, and irregular tool marks on unpolished wooden undersides. The marble top often shows natural wear, subtle surface patination, and hand-bevelled edge profiles consistent with period techniques.

An Empire gueridon functions effectively as an accent table in a hallway or foyer, creating a focal point when placed beneath a mirror or artwork. In living rooms, it can serve as an occasional table beside upholstered seating or anchored in an empty corner to display table lamps and decorative objects.

Clean the marble surface using a soft cloth dampened with warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner, ensuring spills are wiped immediately to prevent staining. Dust the mahogany frame regularly and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the grain to preserve the wood finish.
