19th Century French Empire Red Marble and Mahogany Gueridon Table

19th century
Description

This is a lovely quality 19th century French empire gueridon table. The marble is a deep red with fabulous natural pattern. The base is what drew me to this table, elegantly shaped and clean condition. Complete with the ormolu decoration. The marble has no chips or scratches. There is what appear to be a minor natural fault and you honestly cant tell when viewing the top. Overall the table is hugely decorative and will sit well in a large number of interiors.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte in the early 19th century, French Empire furniture is defined by neoclassical proportions, symmetry, rich mahogany veneers, and ornate gilt-bronze mounts depicting classical motifs.

Gueridon tables were commonly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over oak, fitted with imported marble tops such as rouge royal or grigio carnico, and decorated with chased ormolu or gilt-bronze mounts.

Authentic pieces feature thick hand-cut veneers, cast bronze or brass mounts secured with historic thread screws, hand-turned pedestal columns, and heavy, thick-cut marble tops with period edge profiles.

An Empire gueridon functions exceptionally well as a focal piece in an entryway or foyer, as an accent table in a formal drawing room, or positioned in a bay window to support decorative ceramics or floral arrangements.

Clean marble surfaces with a neutral, non-acidic cloth to prevent etching. Polish mahogany timber with beeswax applied along the grain, and dust gilt-bronze mounts gently with a soft brush to avoid stripping the original patina.
