Georgian Mahogany Kneehole Desk

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality 18th Century, George III Period, Mahogany Kneehole Desk, Having Well Figured Rectangular Top Over Arrangement Of Drawers, Retaining Original Brass Handles, Surrounding Central Cupboard Door, Raised On Elegant Original Ogee Bracket Feet.

As a general rule kneehole desks like this are a smaller, more compact version of the more typically found pedestal desk, with some form of an arrangement of drawers around a central set recessed cupboard the must popular design and layout. There are of course many different designs to be found along the same theme, but as a general rule this is the typical form of an 18th century kneehole desk.

Although originally designed for the use which the name suggests, as a desk in a spot around the home where perhaps space doesn’t suffice for a full size, formal desk, they can of course be utilised in a whole host of different ways including perhaps in a bedroom, or dressing room, as a dressing table with a dressing table mirror placed atop of them. The recessed cupboard combined with the amount of storage available makes them absolutely perfect for this.

Although typical in form this particular little kneehole desk is constructed from attractive mahogany timbers and retains its original brass handles which isn’t always the case with these items. It also boasts extremely attractive and elegant original ogee feet.

As with all items we offer for sale this georgian mahogany kneehole desk has been inspected and attended to in our workshops, by our highly skilled antique furniture restorers, where it has received a traditional, natural wax polish to ensure the condition is absolutely spot on before being offered for sale and therefore it is very much ready for immediate placement within the home.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th century, a Georgian kneehole desk is a compact pedestal-style desk featuring a central recessed cupboard or apron drawer between two stacks of drawers, providing space for legs while seated.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid mahogany or oak, featuring dovetail drawer joints, oak-lined drawer construction, and cast brass hardware such as batwing or swan-neck handles.

Look for hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass backplate handles with threaded posts and cast nuts, hand-planed timber surfaces, and traditional bracket feet.

Integrate the desk into a modern study, bedroom, or living space as a focal writing table, paired with contemporary table lamps, neutral textiles, and minimalist accessories to balance its rich wood tones.

Preserve the original patina by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually, avoiding direct sunlight and harsh chemical cleaners.
