Phil Bell Antique Rugs has dated this Antique Kashan Wool Rug to the 19th Century.
I often say some rugs have a lifetime of interest and this piece is probably one of the best examples of the type. The overall design is almost impossible to take in, it is quite hypnotic to look at as the eye drifts from delicate detail to the overall pattern. Even the borders are a delight with the main border showing an interlocking floral design. The narrrow reciprocal black and white border is quite powerful despite its size and completes the picture in this stunning archaic looking piece. The wear is obvious but in this case I think it adds to the look.
This rug has quite a lot of wear with some foundation showing through. The sides have been rebound in purple silk.
