Malayer rugs originate from the Hamadan region of western Persia, crafted in villages surrounding the town of Malayer during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These textiles are recognised for their single-weft construction, diverse geometric or floral designs, and natural vegetable-dyed wool.

Traditional Malayer rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool pile woven onto a durable cotton or wool warp foundation. Weavers utilised symmetrical or asymmetrical knots combined with dyes derived from local plants, madder root, and indigo.

Authentic pieces exhibit subtle organic asymmetry in design, natural colour variation known as abrash, and soft pile condition from age. The reverse side reveals distinct knot visibility, flexible handle, and a single-weft weave structure typical of the region.
