Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 17th century and reaching peak popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries, overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to sit directly above fireplace mantelpieces. They served to reflect both daylight and candlelight, maximizing brightness in reception rooms while providing a grand focal point in formal interiors.

19th-century overmantel mirrors were constructed with soft wood framing, such as pine or lime, overlaid with carved timber and moulded gesso plaster. The surface was painted with clay bole and finished with hand-applied gold leaf before housing silvered mirror glass.

Authentic period pieces display red or yellow clay bole showing through worn areas of gilding, known as rub-through. Additional indicators include hand-carved rear timber backboards, micro-cracking across gesso mouldings, and natural oxidation or faint foxing spots across the original glass.

An antique gilt mirror can be placed above a modern fireplace surround or styled above a contemporary console table to create visual contrast. Pairing ornate gold leaf scrollwork with clean modern walls highlights the intricate craftsman details of the frame.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding water or liquid cleaners that dissolve water-gilded gesso. Glass cleaner should be applied carefully to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the glass to prevent moisture from seeping behind the frame edges.
