Edwardian Satinwood Display Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

An exquisite Edwardian satinwood display cabinet, distinguished by its refined boxwood and delicate string inlay decoration. The upper glazed doors open to a fabric-lined interior with three shelves, while the glazed sides and front allow natural light to illuminate the contents beautifully. Beneath, a pair of veneered cupboard doors are set above an open shelf, all elevated on slender, tapering legs. As with all antiques, minor imperfections are part of its story. Nonetheless, this is a well-built cabinet with excellent proportions—an adaptable piece that would complement any home.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian furniture from the early 20th century drew heavily on 18th-century neoclassical designs, particularly those of Sheraton and Hepplewhite. Satinwood was chosen for its golden tone, fine grain, and suitability for intricate marquetry, crossbanding, and chevron veneer work.

Cabinets from this period were crafted using solid timber frames with high-quality satinwood veneers, astragal glazing bars, and hand-cut joinery. Additional construction elements often include tapered square legs, decorative inlay, and lower shelving tiers.

Authentic pieces feature natural age-related patina, minor variations in hand-cut veneers, and traditional hardware such as original brass locks and keyholes. The backboards and drawer linings typically exhibit hand-planed timber rather than modern ply or synthetic composite boards.

Positioning a satinwood cabinet against deep wall colours like charcoal, navy, or dark olive creates contrast against the golden wood tones. The glass shelves can be used to store modern ceramics, glassware, or curated book collections.

Position the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood movement, veneer lifting, or timber bleaching. Dust surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to protect the original finish.
