Description

A lovely antique inlaid mahogany display cabinet. We date this cabinet to the very early 20th century.

The cabinet sits on six downward tapered legs and has a lower shelf area.

There is an attractive gallery to the rear with a lovely inlaid fan design.

The front of the cabinet is of a three panel design with each panel being a side hinged door. The centre door being a glazed door and the two outer doors being bowed with a lovely inlaid design to the centre.

All three doors are provided with working locks (key supplied).

The interior of the central cupboard is fitted with two fixed wooden shelves, the shelves and sides are lined in velvet. Each outer cupboard is fitted with two wooden bow front shelves.

The cabinet has an overall height of 66" (169cm) with the gallery, a top surface height of 55.5" (141cm), a width of 55" (140cm) and a depth of 17.5" (44cm).

This lovely mahogany cabinet remains in very good solid condition with only very minor surface markings commensurate with age and usage. There is some minor wear to some edges and some darker marks to the top surface from past use. The fabric has some ring marks where items have sat in the past.

This remains a very stylish and elegant mahogany display cabinet which could house a reasonable sized collection of objects d'art etc. It will continue to provide good service for many years to come.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian display cabinets, produced during the early 20th century, feature classical forms inspired by 18th-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite designs, characterised by curved bow fronts, delicate marquetry, and tapered legs.

Cabinetmakers predominantly utilised solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, embellished with satinwood or rosewood marquetry inlays, clear glass door panels, and brass lock plates.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut joinery, original glass panels with subtle age distortions, natural patination across the wood grain, and precisely executed timber marquetry rather than printed or painted transfers.

Position the cabinet as a standalone statement piece against a neutral or jewel-toned wall, filling the interior shelves with curated contemporary ceramics or books to contrast traditional woodwork with modern items.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once per year, keeping the cabinet away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to protect the inlaid veneers.
