Georgian Incised Twist Small Oil Lamp

18th century
Description

This is a small Georgian, incised twist, oil lamp (often sometimes erroneously called a lacemaker's lamp) dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1770.

The lamp is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the foot which is nicely striated as is the bowl.

The lamp has a flattened ovoid reservoir measuring 7.2 cm (2.9 inches) in diameter at its fullest and measuring 3 cm (1.2 inch) in depth. The reservoir sits on a collar and an incised twist stem with a basal collar, and a conical foot which measures 6.7 cm (2.6 inches) in diameter. The lamp is 9 cm (3.6 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a small white inclusion (probably clinker) in the metal of the bowl dating from manufacture. The lamp rocks slightly on its foot.

It is made from English lead metal weighing in at 150 g. (~ 5 oz.).

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 18th century, British glassmakers developed incised and air-twist stems, applying decorative spiral techniques to functional domestic items including small table oil lamps.

These pieces were hand-blown using heavy lead glass, with stems individually tooled or incised before fusing the fuel reservoir and spreading foot.

Authentic period examples display hand-worked pontil scars on the base, minor glass impurities, and wear patterns consistent with historical usage.

Positioned on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or bookshelf, clear glass lighting accents introduce texture and historical character through ambient light.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild wash-up liquid, avoiding rapid thermal shifts or abrasive chemicals that cause surface degradation.
