Georgian Tall Glass Oil Lamp with Applied Handle

Description

This is a tall, Georgian, glass oil lamp (sometimes but erroneously called a lacemaker's lamp) with an applied handle dating from the second half of the 18th century. Similar lamps can be seen in Keith Kelsall's book - "The Open Flame Lamp".

The lamp is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 200 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the base of the foot.

The lamp has an ovoid-shaped bowl reservoir measuring 6.5 cm (2.6 inches) in diameter. The bowl sits on a hollow inverted baluster stem with a shoulder knop. There is a "drip tray" disk below the reservoir. The stem ends in a collar and a domed and folded foot that measures 13.3 cm (5.3 inches) in diameter. The lamp is 28 cm (11.2 inches) in height. The applied handle was first attached to the top of the stem and then finished off at the bottom of the stem with a curlicue. The handle also has a well-worked thumb rest. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. The lamp has a distinct lean to it.

It weighs 375 g. (~ 13 oz.).
