Konya Prayer Rug

19th century
Description

This is an intriguing rug. I believe it to have good age, possibly earlier than stated but I prefer to be cautious when dating rugs. The weave is floppy with 3-5 wefts of alternating colours between each row of knots. There are at least 7 different coloured wefts which affects the overall palette when seen from the front. The knots are also very big which gives the design a crude appearance. As with many prayer rugs it was woven upside down, that is the prayer arch completed first. I love the rich colours and soft wool, the light blue has wonderful abrash and the multicoloured diamonds that float over it reminds one of the finest stained glass windows. Altogether a beautiful rug.

Low pile in places with the multi-coloured wefts showing through. The sides and ends are original and complete.

A Konya prayer rug is a traditional hand-knotted textile originating from the Konya region in Central Anatolia, Turkey. These carpets characteristically feature a pointed or stepped arch motif, known as a mihrab, which represents the prayer niche in a mosque indicating the direction of Mecca.

Anatolian prayer rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and foundation. Historically, weavers utilized natural organic dyes, such as madder root for deep red tones, indigo for blues, and plant extracts for yellow and ochre shades.

Authentic antique Konya rugs exhibit hand-spun wool, slight colour variations within the weave known as abrash, and distinct geometric iconography. Inspecting the underside reveals hand-bound edges and hand-tied symmetrical or asymmetrical wool knots.

A vibrant tribal Anatolian rug provides texture and historical contrast in contemporary spaces. It can be placed in an entryway, arranged alongside neutral furniture, or mounted on a wall as a textile art piece.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to protect the hand-bound edges and fringe. Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth, and consult a specialist textile restorer for periodic cleaning.
