Bijar Rug

19th century
Description

This is in my opinion a very beautiful rug, there is always something special about a plain field with good abrash as seen here. The central arabesque Garrus design on a deep blue field also has a wonderful archaic look. The blue spandrels contain some fascinating floral and geometric designs. The abrash in both the main field and spandrels creates an illusion of depth with the red field sometimes appearing closer and then retreating into the background depending on where your eye falls. Great rugs have longevity of interest, that is you can look at them for years and still see them afresh. This rug has that magic and stands out as one of the best in my collection.

Low pile throughout although not to the detriment of the overall appearance. Like most Bijar rugs this is a densely woven and robust piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bijar rugs are hand-knotted Persian carpets originating from the town of Bijar in north-western Iran. Renowned for their heavy, densely packed pile and exceptional structural strength, they frequently feature geometric medallions, anchor motifs, and rich colour palettes.

Traditionally, Bijar rugs are woven using hand-spun wool for the pile, knotted onto a thick wool or cotton foundation. A double-wefted construction with heavily beaten structural yarns creates an exceptionally compact and durable weave.

Authentic antique Bijar carpets feature an exceptionally stiff, dense weave that makes them difficult to fold without damaging the structure. They display hand-spun wool with natural abrash colour variations, hand-tied knots, and traditional motifs such as central stepped medallions and anchor pendants.

A Bijar rug anchors contemporary spaces by introducing texture, rich warm tones, and historical depth beneath neutral furniture. Placement under a dining table, coffee table, or central seating arrangement complements both minimalist and eclectic decor schemes.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to protect the wool fibres. Professional specialist cleaning is recommended periodically, and rotating the rug annually prevents uneven wear and localized sun fading.
