Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian writing slope is a portable wooden box that opens to form an angled surface for writing letters and documents. Widely produced during the 19th century, these boxes held paper, inkwells, pens, and personal letters for travellers and home offices.

Victorian writing slopes were commonly constructed from solid hardwoods or timber veneers such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood. They frequently incorporated brass binding at the edges for structural reinforcement, along with velvet or leather writing surfaces internally.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-cut dovetail joints, flush-fitted brass straps or corner mounts, and period-correct locks such as Bramah or yield-type mechanisms. Natural age-related wear, hand-engraved escutcheons, and original secret compartments behind spring-loaded panels also signal authenticity.

A writing slope can be placed flat on a modern executive desk, a library console table, or a deep bookshelf. Displaying it closed highlights the decorative wood grain and brasswork, while displaying it partially open showcases interior compartments and writing tools.

Dust the exterior regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly along the timber grain. Avoid harsh chemicals on the brass fittings to preserve the historic patina, and store the box away from direct heat sources to prevent veneer lifting.
