Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III toilet mirror, also termed a dressing glass, is a British tabletop mirror produced between 1760 and 1820. Designed to sit atop a chest of drawers or dressing table, these pieces typically feature an adjustable swivelling glass mounted above a wooden box base containing small drawers for cosmetics and jewellery.

These mirrors were primarily constructed from solid and veneered mahogany, frequently utilizing oak or pine as secondary internal woods. Drawer construction features hand-cut dovetail joints, while the mirror plate was originally silvered using a mercury process, framed by shaped timber supports.

Authentic pieces display hand-saw marks on the back panels, irregular hand-cut dovetails on the base drawers, and natural oxidisation on original brass or timber fittings. The mirror glass may show subtle grey spotting or clouding known as foxing, characteristic of historic mercury silvering.

Position the mirror atop a modern sideboard, bedroom chest, or vanity unit to create a functional focal point. Pair the dark mahogany tone with neutral linen textures, contemporary ceramic vessels, or understated brass lighting to balance period woodwork with modern decor.

Dust the woodwork regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax twice yearly to protect the finish. Avoid commercial glass cleaners containing ammonia, applying water or specialist glass cleaner sparingly onto a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror plate.
