FAQs

Chinese export porcelain punch bowls were produced in China from the seventeenth century onwards, designed specifically for western markets. They feature functional, wide-rimmed forms decorated with intricate hand-painted motifs and polychrome enamels.

These pieces are crafted from high-fired kaolin clay finished with a clear feldspathic glaze. Decorative elements are applied using mineral-based overglaze enamels, such as cobalt blue and famille rose pigments, before undergoing secondary firing.

Authentic items feature subtle irregularities in the porcelain body, brush marks from hand-painted execution, and minor firing flaws. The foot rim typically remains unglazed, revealing the texture and slight oxidisation of the clay.
