Georgian Oak Welsh Dresser

18th century
Description

A late 18th century oak potboard dresser, c1780, with three turned forelegs, three drawers (the central drawer with working lock and key) and a potboard shelf. The upper section has shelves with plate grooves and the original iron hooks, with shaped sides and a moulded cornice. The dresser has a lovely rich colour and is a beautiful piece of furniture.

Condition: Overall this is in very good condition with a few minor repairs and signs of wear, in accordance with age and use, as follows: there is some damage to the edging running around the potboard shelf, including a couple of pieces that have been broken and reattached. There is wear to the feet. There is an area of loss to the potboard shelf at the rear on the left hand side, and there are some splits in the timber in the same area. There is an expansion crack in the side of the base on the left hand side. I don’t think the handles are original as there appear to be marks from previous handles just visible around the edges, but they have certainly been on the piece for some time. The top section doesn’t sit quite as far forward on the right hand side as it does on the left - there are metal brackets that hold it in place on the back and the right hand bracket has been shaped to accommodate this. The wood is a lovely rich colour and the drawers run smoothly. The top separates from the base for transportation.

Dimensions:

Width (maximum across cornice) - 171cm

Depth - 44cm

Height - 189cm (the base section is 81cm tall)

A Georgian Welsh dresser is a traditional storage unit originating from the 18th and early 19th centuries, typically comprising an open plate rack mounted on a base containing drawers and often a lower pot board shelf.

Georgian dressers were primarily constructed from solid regional hardwoods, with oak being the most prominent. Secondary woods such as pine were frequently utilised for drawer linings, and hardware was commonly forged iron or cast brass.

Authentic Georgian dressers exhibit period construction indicators, including hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetail joints, oak drawer bases, authentic surface patination, and original brass hardware or clear markings where original fixings once sat.

A traditional dresser can be integrated into contemporary spaces by populating the open shelving with minimalist ceramics, glassware, or art books, using the dark timber tone to contrast against neutral wall palettes.

Maintain antique oak by applying a thin layer of natural beeswax paste annually to protect the timber finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or fading.
