Description

Late-19th-century French hard-paste porcelain figure attributed to Samson, Paris. A courtly gentleman with hurdy-gurdy stands on a rococo scroll base with stump support; a tricorn hat lies at his feet. By the dense body, bright glaze, bouquet-sprig decoration and staging, the attribution aligns with Samson’s Paris workshop. The hurdy-gurdy theme, rooted in rococo and the commedia dell’arte, was revived in a refined salon register in this period. Mid-18th-century France saw the hurdy-gurdy fashionable among the aristocracy and salons; noted composers, including Vivaldi, wrote for it. Related porcelain figures are recorded in museum catalogues and auction literature.

Marks: spurious underglaze blue mark to base, consistent with Paris reproductions after 18th-century prototypes.

Condition: excellent; no restoration, breaks or losses; minor rubbing to gilding at cuffs. Instrument intact.
