Fine 19th Century Mahogany Side Table in the Chippendale Manner

19th century
Description

An impressive 19th century mahogany side table, richly carved in the Chippendale taste. The rectangular top is banded in beautifully figured mahogany above a frieze of three drawers over another set of three, each retaining its original brass drop handles and finished with fine hand-cut dovetails. The drawers are framed by intricate egg-and-dart and bead mouldings.

The table is raised on six square-section tapering legs, each adorned with crisply carved acanthus and bellflower motifs, terminating in block feet. Deeply carved corner brackets with anthemion and foliate details add grandeur and classical balance. This substantial piece would work perfectly as a statement console, serving table, or hall table in a Georgian or traditional setting.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Furniture in the Chippendale manner incorporates design elements popularised by Thomas Chippendale in the 18th century, frequently revived throughout the 19th century. Key features include detailed wood carvings, acanthus leaf motifs, geometric mouldings, and rich mahogany timber construction.

19th-century side tables were primarily constructed using solid mahogany framing alongside rich mahogany veneers. Drawers were built with hand-cut dovetail joints, secondary timbers such as oak or pine for internal linings, and cast brass handles.

Authentic 19th-century pieces demonstrate natural age-related patination, subtle variations in hand-carved elements, and secondary drawer timbers displaying hand-planing marks. Brass fittings typically feature aged surface oxidisation rather than bright modern plating.

A substantial mahogany side table serves as a architectural focal point in an entry hall or dining space when set against neutral plaster walls. Pairing dark wood furniture with contemporary abstract art or minimalist ceramic vessels creates an engaging interior contrast.

Maintain mahogany furniture by positioning it away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to avoid timber shrinkage or fading. Dust regularly with a clean microfiber cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax once or twice annually, buffing along the direction of the grain.
