Named traditionally after the Countess of Pembroke who first commissioned the form, it was intended for dining, tea service, or bedside use in Georgian homes.

High-quality Cuban or West Indian mahogany was the primary wood used for these tables due to its dense grain and rich tone. Secondary woods like pine or oak were used for drawer linings, while decorative features often incorporated satinwood marquetry inlays and cast brass handles.
