Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a specialized wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries in Britain and Europe, these mirrors were engineered to reflect light across grand reception rooms while anchored visually to the fireplace hearth.

Traditional 19th-century mirrors typically feature a carved softwood or hardwood base frame covered in gesso, a composite substrate of chalk and size. Fine gold leaf was applied over a bole clay foundation using water gilding or oil gilding techniques, accompanied by heavy glass plates.

Authentic period pieces often show fine hairline cracking known as craquelure in the gesso surface, alongside subtle wear where the red or grey bole clay shows through the gold leaf. The reverse side usually features hand-sawn timber backing boards, original iron fixing plates, and natural oxidisation spots on the silvering.

Positioning a substantial gilt mirror above a chimney breast creates an immediate architectural focal point in both period and contemporary living spaces. Pair it with neutral wall paint schemes, clean-lined seating, and understated mantel displays to balance the detailed gilded trim.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or damp cloths which dissolve gesso and detach fragile gold leaf. For the mirror plate, apply a mild glass cleaner lightly to a microfibre cloth rather than spraying directly onto the glass.
