Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian ladderback chairs feature multiple horizontal arched or pierced back slats mounted between upright stiles. Originating in the eighteenth century, the design evolved from utilitarian country furniture into refined mahogany pieces influenced by makers such as Thomas Chippendale.

High-grade dense mahogany imported from the West Indies was the primary timber used for urban Georgian chairs, while regional examples utilised native woods like oak, ash, or fruitwood. Joints were held with traditional mortise and tenon joinery, often secured with wooden pegs.

Authentic eighteenth-century chairs exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, natural wood shrinkage around joints, and dark oxidisation on unpolished undersides. Original construction typically features corner blocks beneath the seat frame and hand-chiseled mortise and tenon connections.

Pairing dark mahogany dining chairs with modern minimalist tables creates an effective visual contrast. They can also serve individually or as pairs as accent seating in hallways, flank a console table, or function as desk chairs.

Apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and maintain the natural patina. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, cracking, or fabric fading.
