Pair of Sitzendorf Porcelain Figures, Children with Pet Lambs, Germany C.1887

19th century
Description

A highly refined pair of 19th-century German porcelain figures, attributed to the Sitzendorf manufactory under Bros. Voigt & Alfred Voigt, circa 1887. Each figure depicts a seated child accompanied by a pet lamb — the girl feeding hers with a gilded spoon, and the boy gently petting his in a gesture of affectionate care. Both figures are finely hand-painted with floral decoration and gilt accents, wearing Rococo-style costumes. Of particular note is the use of porcelain lace: real textile lace soaked in porcelain slip and fired to create intricate openwork elements on the clothing. This demanding and fragile process was a hallmark of Sitzendorf production in the late 19th century. Underside with underglaze blue cross-hatch mark, consistent with Sitzendorf markings from the Voigt period. These child-themed compositions were central to the factory’s output and remain highly regarded among collectors of German porcelain.

Condition: Boy: minor lace losses, small firing flaw to the base (from production); otherwise in excellent condition. Girl: small lace losses only; gilding and painting very well preserved.

Measurements:

Boy: 13.5 cm high, 7.5 cm wide, 8 cm deep, 312 g

Girl: 13.5 cm high, 8.5 cm wide, 8 cm deep, 365 g

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sitzendorf porcelain figures produced during the late 19th century are recognised for their Rococo Revival style, pastoral themes, and intricate hand-painted enamels. Originating from Thuringia, Germany, these pieces frequently feature figures in 18th-century courtly or pastoral dress, decorated with detailed porcelain lace and gilding.

These statuettes were constructed from hard-paste porcelain, composed of kaolin, feldspar, and quartz. The pieces were press-moulded, assembled, fired at high temperatures, and subsequently detailed with hand-applied enamel glazes and gilding.

Authentic pieces generally feature the Sitzendorf factory mark, such as the crown over S or crossed lines, painted or impressed on the underside of the base. Additional indicators include sharp moulding details, fine porcelain lace application, and precise hand-painted facial features.

Ornate porcelain statuettes are traditionally displayed on mantelpieces, inside glazed display cabinets, or atop sideboards. Styling them alongside understated modern textures or contemporary glassware highlights their historic craftsmanship without cluttering the visual space.

Clean delicate porcelain using a dry, soft-bristled brush or a lint-free microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or submersion in water, especially on pieces with porcelain lace or cold-painted gilding, to prevent abrasion.
