Samson Porcelain Figures, "The Idyllic Musicians", Paris, C.1880, After Derby

Description

A decorative and well-executed pair of antique porcelain figures attributed to the Paris workshop of Edmé Samson, c.1880. The composition is a close revival of Derby’s famous "Pipe and Tabor Figures" of the 1760s, with the male holding a flageolet and (originally) a tabor stick, and the female holding a triangle, her striker now lost.

These figures represent a typical example of Samson’s 19th-century interpretation of English rococo models, painted in soft enamels over a warm-toned, satin-glazed porcelain body. The crossed batons mark on the underside, here executed in purple enamel, is a clear imitation of the Derby factory mark.

This well-preserved pair is especially appealing to collectors of English-style 18th-century revival porcelain, combining accurate modelling with 19th-century Parisian craftsmanship.

Condition and Dimensions:

Male figure: H 21 cm, W 10 cm, D 11 cm, 506 g. Stick missing, chips to bow and base, minor wear to enamels and foliage.

Female figure: H 21 cm, W 11 cm, D 9.5 cm, 482 g. Triangle striker missing, small chips to leaves, minor enamel losses. Faces and costume decoration in very good condition.
