Superb Victorian Mahogany Partners Writing Table - Circa 1870

19th century
For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

Presented in exceptional showroom condition, this striking Victorian partners writing table is an excellent example of 19th-century English craftsmanship. Constructed in solid mahogany throughout, the piece combines both practicality and elegance in a refined and unusual design.

Unlike the more common arrangement with drawers along the length of the table, this distinctive model features drawers positioned at either end, allowing easy access from both sides while preserving a balanced and symmetrical form. This configuration makes it ideally suited for shared use, with ample legroom for two individuals seated opposite each other.

The writing surface is adorned with a new, thick, high-quality leather inset, expertly hand-dyed using traditional methods to achieve a rich, aged oxblood red tone. The leather is beautifully finished with an ornate gold-tooled border, enhancing the table’s overall sense of grandeur and sophistication.

Each drawer is crafted from solid mahogany with fine dovetail joints, reflecting the quality expected of Victorian cabinetry. The raised fielded drawer fronts are a mark of distinction, and they retain their original brass swan-neck handles and working locks.

Supporting the table are four robust, turned mahogany legs, showcasing elegant shaping and proportion. The legs are fitted with porcelain castors, ensuring smooth movement while preserving the period character.

This is a truly handsome and versatile piece—functional, decorative, and historically resonant. Whether used as a working desk in a professional study or as a statement piece in a home office or library, it makes a positive and lasting impression in any setting.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A partners writing table is a double-sided desk designed during the 19th century to accommodate two people working face-to-face simultaneously.

Victorian writing tables were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or walnut, featuring gilded leather writing surfaces, brass castors, and dovetailed frieze drawers.

Authentic Victorian desks feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass castors, genuine gold-tooled leather writing surfaces, and natural age-related patina on the timber.

An antique writing table serves as a central focal point in a contemporary home office when paired with modern task lighting, neutral wall finishes, and ergonomic seating.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft dry cloth, polish periodically with beeswax, and condition the leather insert with specialised leather balm to prevent drying and cracking.
