Description

Beautiful, dark, patinated bronze, Jurojin, one of the seven lucky gods with his companion deer. Jurojin is often confused with Fukurokuju, they are believed to share the same body. This okimono is very well detailed with good patina and finish. His staff is detachable. The bronze base is 20cms (8 inches) diameter. Meiji period.

Condition: Excellent. No scuffing or scratches. Will make a perfect focal point in a minimalist room or maybe the Managing Directors' office.

An okimono is a Japanese decorative sculpture or figurine intended for interior display, traditionally placed within a tokonoma display alcove. Emerging prominently during the Meiji period, these objects were sculpted from bronze, ivory, or wood, depicting deities, mythical figures, animals, and daily life.

Japanese bronze okimono were crafted using lost-wax casting (cire perdue) or sand casting techniques. Master metalworkers hand-carved intricate moulds, cast the bronze, and finished the surface with cold-chiseling and chemical patination to achieve deep brown or black tones.

Authentic pieces display crisp hand-carved detail in the facial features, drapery, and hair, along with natural surface wear and historical patination. Many original Meiji bronzes feature cast or incised makers marks or artist seals on the underside of the base.
