This exceptionally imposing bronze stands 660mm (26") tall with trunk raised, (a symbol of good luck) and has a lovely textured surface and patina. In very good and original condition and singed underneath. 660mm high, 690mm wide and 350mm deep. Japan. Circa 1880.

An okimono is a Japanese decorative sculpture intended for display on a flat surface or in a display alcove. Produced in abundance during the Meiji era (18681912), these figures often feature animals, deities, or everyday scenes carved from ivory or cast in bronze.

Craftsmen used lost-wax casting techniques to form the basic shape of the sculpture, followed by extensive hand-chiselling, chasing, and polishing to achieve fine detail. Patination was then applied using specialized chemical treatments to produce deep brown or black tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit realistic anatomical proportions, intricate surface textures such as skin wrinkles or fur, and substantial cast weight. They frequently bear a signature incised or cast into the base or underside by the artist or workshop.

A bronze sculpture works well positioned on a wooden sideboard, console table, or wide mantelpiece, where its dark patina creates a silhouette against neutral walls or rich wood panelling.
