Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced extensively during the late 19th century, cast iron stick stands were entryway accessories designed to store walking sticks, canes, and umbrellas. Foundries such as Falkirk produced detailed cast metalwork featuring foliage, architectural, or scroll motifs.

These stands were manufactured by pouring molten iron into sand moulds, allowing for intricate pierced patterns and structural details. They were designed with built-in or removable drip trays at the base to catch water from wet umbrellas.

Authentic period pieces often feature foundry marks, design registration marks, or pattern numbers stamped into the rear casting or base. Original examples display crisp casting definition, substantial weight, and correctly fitted drip trays.

Position the stand in an entryway, porch, or hallway beside a front door to establish an organised foyer space. The defined metalwork contrasts effectively with neutral painted walls, tiled floors, or timber panelling.

Keep the iron clean and dry to prevent surface oxidisation and rust formation. Dust regularly using a dry soft brush, and apply a light layer of microcrystalline wax periodically to protect the finished surface.
