Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror, traditionally referred to as a chimney glass, is a large mirror constructed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popular throughout the 19th century in British interiors, these mirrors were designed to maximize natural light and reflect candlelight across formal reception rooms.

Nineteenth-century overmantel mirrors were constructed using timber frames coated with moulded gesso or plaster to form intricate details. The surfaces were finished with paint or gilding, housing thick silvered plate glass secured by pine backing boards.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-moulded gesso details, wooden plank backings showing age, and original glass exhibiting light foxing or oxidisation. The paint finish typically demonstrates layered wear, subtle craquelure, and natural distress around hand-worked joints.

A painted overmantel mirror can be mounted above a chimney breast to anchor a living room or set atop a console table to create vertical structure. Its neutral painted finish provides contrast against dark wall paints or blends into minimalist, light-toned schemes.

Clean the glass panel with a lightly dampened microfibre cloth, ensuring moisture does not contact the edge of the frame. Dust the painted gesso detailing gently using a soft dry brush, avoiding chemical solvents that may degrade original paint layers.
