Georgian 18th Century Oak Press Cupboard

18th century
Description

An Extremely Attractive Mid 18th Century George II Period Oak Kitchen Cupboard, Or Linen Press, Retaining Exceptional Untouched Colour And Surface Throughout, Having Matchstick Fluted Carved Decoration And Two Panelled Doors Flanked By Elegant Fluted Half Turned Coloumns To Each Corner, Enclosing Two Fixed Shelves, Over Three Short And Two Long Drawers With Replacement Brass Handles, Raised On Replacement Shaped Bracket Feet.

This extremely charming and useful Georgian cupboard is incredibly attractive. One of the nicest of its type that we have come across in quite some time it boasts some excellent additional features to the norm, but also retains the most wonderful colour, quite a combination.

The top has some lovely carved decoration and this helps lift the piece into a different bracket of country furniture with it showing much more sophistication than normally found in items from the country.

It is also of course incredibly practical with lots and lots of storage, yet somehow unlike many of these oak housekeeper type cabinets the proportions are relatively small and sensible allowing it to be used in just about any size space and in any type of home.

Overall the condition is very good indeed and it is very much fit for original purpose. The handles and feet have both been replaced, but with a very similar style to what would probably have been in place originally and therefore they sit extremely well on the piece.

As with all items we offer for sale this piece has been inspected by our highly skilled antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being placed on sale which means it is ready for immediate placement into the home.

Circa 1750.

Height 71.5in.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian oak press cupboard is an 18th-century piece of case furniture traditionally designed with a top cupboard section featuring panelled doors over a lower chest of drawers, originally used for storing textiles, linens, and clothing.

These cupboards were constructed primarily from solid English or Welsh oak, utilizing hand-dovetailed drawer joints, fielded panel doors, brass swan-neck handles, and carved bracket feet.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed oak timber with irregular grain patterns, hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct iron hinges or brass key plates, and natural signs of timber shrinkage along the panel edges.

A press cupboard provides substantial vertical storage and architectural weight, functioning as a focal point in an entryway, dining room, or principal bedroom alongside simple modern textiles.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice per year, keeping the furniture away from direct heat sources to prevent wood shrinkage.
