Overall measurements with the frame are 90cm x 76cm x 10cm and the painting measured at 76cm x 60cm
Il Tagliapanni (The Tailor) is one of Moroni’s most famous paintings. The dress and the style of the painting suggest that he made it late in his career, around 1570.
The cloth merchant or tailor looks up at us, interrupted from his work.
He wears a sword belt, denoting high status, and his clothes are those of a successful professional rather than an artisan; he may have been a senior officer of a guild, proud to be portrayed at his work. The portrait appears to capture a fleeting moment, like a snapshot, giving it a startling vitality and psychological realism that was highly unusual for the time.
The immediacy and vividness of this portrait may be partly due to Moroni’s method of painting directly from life without making preliminary drawings.
The painting at hand is a later 20th faithful and very well composed copy of The Tailor by Giovanni Battista Moroni in the National Gallery, London. The original was purchased by the National Gallery in 1862 from a collector in Bergamo, who bought it from a painter called Schiavone, who had acquired the picture around 1845. It had been in the Casa Grimani in Venice since before 1660.
Note the frame that will be sent is the plain gold frame in the double photo and in all of the room photographs.
Condition report: The painting has recently been lined with a couple of even infill repairs with associated retouching also to a few small areas. The painting has also been cleaned and the paint surface is stable. New stretcher bars have been used within the lining process. In good overall condition ready to line with only superficial areas of unevenness to the original canvas not noticeable when hung and framed in a gold 20th century frame which is offered as a gift (see notes below regarding frames).
