A superb early Victorian oil-on-board portrait depicting Sarah Siddons (née Kemble, 1755–1831), the renowned 18th-century tragic actress. This work is an accomplished 19th-century English School interpretation after Thomas Gainsborough’s celebrated 1785 portrait of the sitter.

Sarah Siddons was the most celebrated dramatic actress of the Georgian period, famed for her commanding presence and memorable portrayal of Lady Macbeth. Born into the illustrious Kemble theatrical family, she achieved lasting fame on the London stage and became a cultural icon of her time.

This portrait presents her in elegant attire—dressed in a striped blue gown with a yellow mantle, a distinctive black beaver hat adorned with ostrich feathers, and holding a fox-fur muff. The composition mirrors the original by Gainsborough while introducing the distinct brushwork and surface treatment typical of mid-19th-century academic painting.
