Original British Sporting Horse Oil Painting | Signed | Painted from Life
A fine original oil on canvas by the British sporting artist Herbert St. John Jones, painted from life at Nantwich on 19 February 1925.
Executed with careful attention to anatomy and character, it is an excellent example of early twentieth-century British sporting art.

The reverse bears the artist's original handwritten inscription:
"Painted from Life at Nantwich – H. Herbert St. John Jones – Feb. 19th, 1925."
This inscription confirms that the portrait was painted directly from life.

Historical Background
Painted during the 1925 Cheshire hunting season, the work reflects the strong tradition of sporting and equestrian painting associated with the county during the early twentieth century.

Herbert St. John Jones is recorded as having received commissions from the Duke and Duchess of Westminster at Eaton Hall and became well known for his portraits of horses, livestock and rural sporting subjects.

Comparison with earlier auction records indicates that the correct title of the painting is Grisette rather than the later transcription "Griselle", with the artist's original inscription supporting this reading.
