Victorian Biblical Narrative Oil Painting Daniel in the Lions Den

19th century
Description

Victorian Biblical Oil Painting "Daniel in the Lions' Den" Attributed to Isaac Findler (1809–1888), Signed & Dated 1881

A striking Victorian oil painting on canvas depicting the biblical story of **Daniel in the Lions' Den**, attributed to Staffordshire artist Isaac Findler (1809–1888) and signed and dated 1881.

The composition portrays Daniel seated upon a rocky outcrop surrounded by lions yet protected through divine intervention. Dressed in a vivid crimson robe, he gazes heavenward in prayer, creating a powerful image of faith, courage, and spiritual endurance.

Executed in oil on canvas, this impressive nineteenth-century religious painting combines strong decorative appeal with historical and devotional significance. The dramatic contrast between the illuminated figure of Daniel and the dark surrounding landscape creates a compelling visual presence.

Attributed to Isaac Findler

Isaac Findler was born in 1809 and lived in Cheddleton near Leek, Staffordshire. Although professionally employed as a painter and decorator, he became known locally for producing landscapes and religious subjects.

A related painting of Daniel in the Lions' Den executed by Findler in 1846 is held by Staffordshire County Museum, demonstrating the artist's long-standing interest in this biblical narrative. The present work, dated 1881, would represent a mature example from the latter part of his career.

Signature & Attribution

Signed lower left "Findler" and dated 1881, although part of the signature and date are obscured by the frame.

Offered as attributed to Isaac Findler based upon the visible signature, subject matter, stylistic characteristics, period, and comparison with documented works by the artist. Attribution is provided as a professional opinion and not a guarantee.

Victorian biblical narrative paintings are nineteenth-century fine art works depicting scenes from scripture, created to convey moral narrative, spiritual devotion, and classical storytelling popular throughout the era.

Artists generally used oil-based pigments bound with linseed oil, applied directly onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, and secured within carved, gilded wood or plaster frames.

Authentic period canvases typically show age-appropriate craquelure across the paint surface, natural timber oxidisation on the rear stretcher bars, and hand-applied leaf gilding on the original frame.

Position the framed canvas above a mantelpiece or dark timber sideboard, balancing its dark chiaroscuro tones with muted wall colours and classic decorative accessories.

Keep the artwork displayed away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and active heat sources, dusting the frame and surface gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush.
