Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A nineteenth-century mahogany open armchair typically features exposed timber framing with open spaces between the armrests and seat. Constructed from dense mahogany, these chairs often showcase hand-carved details, turned front legs, and leather upholstery designed for library or office use.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised solid mahogany or walnut for the framework, prized for stability and fine grain. Seats and backrests were cushioned using horsehair, steel coil springs, and jute webbing, faced with dyed leather or woven fabrics and secured with brass studs.

Authentic pieces demonstrate hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass castors with period patina, and evidence of hand-planing on unseen timber surfaces. Genuine nineteenth-century mahogany possesses a distinct weight, rich depth of tone, and subtle wear patterns around the armrests and stretcher rails.

Place the armchair alongside a modern desk or within a contemporary reading nook to create a focal point of texture and historical interest. Combining dark timber and patinated leather with clean modern lighting balances classic craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics.

Dust timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to protect the mahogany finish. Leather upholstery requires routine wiping with a damp cloth and periodic conditioning with specialised leather balm to prevent drying and cracking.
