Antique Regency Lady's Desk

19th century
Description

A delightful mahogany writing desk of small proportions raised on beautifully turned legs with carved capitals.

The leather top lifts to reveal an open interior storage compartment and is gracefully finished with a brass balustrade design gallery.

To the right a slim drawer for ink, pens and pencils.

As can be seen from the images, the top can also rest flat thanks to a clever small wooden support so that it can also serve as an occasional table or lamp stand.

This is an exquisite piece of furniture able to enhance a corner of a room or even a larger space.

Circa 1820

Dimensions: 42cm w x 46.5cm d x 82cm (max h, including gallery) / 75cm (h to the front)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency ladies writing desks, popular in early 19th-century England, feature delicate proportions, classical motifs, functional drawers, brass galleries, and leather-lined writing surfaces designed for lighter correspondence.

These desks were primarily crafted using solid and veneered mahogany or rosewood, accompanied by hand-carved turned legs, cast brass fittings, and gold-tooled leather tops.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, period brass hardware, subtle oxidisation on metalwork, natural wear to the timber finish, and hand-carved reeded or turned leg details.

A compact Regency writing desk can be placed in a bedroom alcove, hallway, or living room nook, paired with a contemporary accent chair and minimalist lighting to balance historical character with modern function.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the wood grain twice yearly and gently wipe the leather top with a clean microfibre cloth.
