Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An escritoire, often referred to as a secretaire a abattant, is a tall piece of furniture designed for writing and document storage. Originating in France and widely adopted across Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it features a hinged fall-front flap that lowers to form a horizontal writing surface while concealing interior drawers and pigeonholes.

Nineteenth-century escritoires are primarily constructed using solid hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, often finished with decorative flame mahogany veneers. Internal construction features hand-cut dovetail joints, brass lock plates, and counterbalanced or stayed hinge mechanisms to support the weight of the fall-front flap.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display signs of hand construction, including irregular hand-cut dovetails on drawer joints, secondary timber like pine or oak used for drawer linings, and cast brass escutcheons showing light oxidisation. The shrinkage of solid wood over time may also cause minor unevenness or fine cracking along veneer lines.

An escritoire serves as a focal point in a home office, hallway, or living area. Its tall vertical profile allows it to fit into narrower spaces while offering concealed storage, and pairing it with minimalist lighting or modern artwork provides a balanced aesthetic contrast.

Mahogany furniture should be kept away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber cracking and veneer lift. Clean surfaces using a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the protective finish and natural patina.
