Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a decorative wall mirror specifically proportioned to hang or sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these mirrors often feature a flat base to sit flush against the shelf and an arched or ornate upper crest designed to draw the eye upward.

Nineteenth-century frames were traditionally crafted from a softwood base, such as pine, covered in layers of composition (compo) or carved plaster to form decorative mouldings. This structure was coated with gesso, painted with bole clay, and finished with delicate gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period gilt mirrors display natural wear, subtle cracking in the gesso (craquelure), and visible seams where gold leaf squares overlap. The back panels are typically constructed from hand-sawn wooden boards, and the glass may show light foxing or small dark spots from age-related oxidisation.

Place the mirror centrally above a fireplace or console table to create an architectural focal point that reflects natural light. Combining the warm metallic finish with neutral wall tones or contemporary artwork creates an effective balance between traditional detail and modern minimalism.

Clean giltwood frames using only a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster to remove surface dust. Avoid liquid cleaners, damp cloths, or commercial polishes, as water and solvents can dissolve the water-gilded finish and damage the underlying gesso layer.
