Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late 18th century, decorative wall mirrors featuring Papal coats of arms, tiaras, and crossed keys were crafted in Italy, often commissioned for ecclesiastical residences, Vatican officials, or prominent Catholic patrons to symbolise religious authority and status.

These mirrors were constructed from carved timber, typically pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso to create a smooth base. Gold leaf was applied using water gilding techniques over a coloured clay base known as bole, with mirrored plates made of hand-blown glass backed with mercury amalgam.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display hand-carving irregularities, natural wood shrinkage at joint lines, and wear to the gilding where the underlying reddish bole shows through. The reverse usually reveals hand-sawn timber backing, and original mirror plates show slight distortion and dark spots from silvering oxidisation.

A carved giltwood mirror functions effectively as a focal point mounted above a contemporary hallway console table or fireplace mantel. Placing historic gilded decor against a neutral or dark backdrop creates an engaging contrast between antique craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

Giltwood surfaces should only be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid lifting delicate gold leaf. Water or liquid chemicals must never be applied directly to water-gilded frames, and the mirror should be kept in a stable environment away from high humidity and direct heat sources.
