Stick back chairs are traditional vernacular seats characterised by vertical spindles turned or shaved by hand and slotted directly into a thick wooden seat board. Makers commonly utilised locally available hardwoods, combining elm for the dense, non-splitting seat boards with ash or oak for the steam-bent armbows, turned spindles, and splayed legs. Construction relied on wedged mortise and tenon joints without the use of metal fasteners.

Authentic period examples display irregular hand-shaved spindles, deep wedged leg joints visible on the seat top, and natural shrinkage or warping consistent with age. Look for subtle tool marks, hand-carved arm surfaces, and genuine patination in crevices.

These sculptural timber pieces function as striking accent seating alongside neutral upholstery or minimalist architectural elements. Placing a pair in a hallway or beside a modern hearth introduces tactile warmth and historical grounding.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush to clean crevices around the spindles and joints. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to nourish dry timber, avoiding excessive moisture and direct heat sources.
