18th Century Ash and Elm Hoop Back Windsor Chair

18th century
Description

This is a great looking, totally honest 18th century Windsor chair. All original with attractive patina showing its life. The shaped seat has lovely wear to the colour as do the arms. Overall condition is perfectly useable and doesn't hide the chairs age, Giving it plenty of character. Meaning although useable it would also make a great decorators piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Windsor chairs are characteristically constructed with slender vertical spindles driven into a solid timber seat, featuring steam-bent back hoops and turned legs wedged directly into the base structure.

Traditional English Windsor chairs typically feature a combination of native hardwoods, including ash for the steam-bent back hoop, elm for the thick contoured seat, and beech or fruitwood for the turned legs.

Authentic period Windsor chairs display hand-planed surfaces, subtle irregularities in turned spindles, through-tenon joint construction secured with wedges, and natural patination in high-touch areas.

A Windsor armchair serves as a visual accent piece in contemporary spaces, working well in dining arrangements, hallway corners, or alongside modern minimalist upholstery to add historic contrast.

Care for the timber by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying natural beeswax polish annually, ensuring placement stays clear of central heating radiators to prevent wood shrinkage.
