Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian mirrors produced in the 18th century feature classical architectural elements such as broken pediments, carved finials, and fluted side pilasters. The frames were traditionally executed in hand-carved timber coated in water gilding, reflecting Palladian, Rococo, and Neoclassical design influences.

Frames were typically carved from softwoods such as Scots pine or lime wood, followed by the application of multiple gesso layers and a clay bole foundation. Pure gold leaf was laid using water-gilding techniques and burnished with agate stones to achieve a brilliant metallic sheen.

Authentic period mirrors feature hand-sawn softwood backboards held by handmade iron nails, alongside visible red or yellow bole clay showing through areas of worn gilding. Original mirror glass often exhibits subtle silvering degradation, mercury plate thickness variations, or mild atmospheric foxing.

Positioning a giltwood mirror above a simple modern fireplace mantel or clean-lined console table creates an engaging contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary minimalism. Hanging the mirror opposite a window maximises natural light diffusion across modern living spaces.

Dust giltwood surfaces gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes that dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Maintain stable indoor humidity to prevent the underlying timber substrate from expanding, contracting, or flaking.
