A Victorian gilt gesso mirror is a decorative wall glass framed in wood coated with gesso, a smooth mixture of plaster and glue, which is sculpted into intricate details and layered with gold leaf.

These mirrors were constructed using softwood frames, sculpted gesso moulding, and water or oil gilding using thin gold leaf. The reflective surface was traditionally created using silvered glass plates.

Authentic period pieces show subtle cracking called craquelure in the gesso surface, natural wear exposing the red or grey bole beneath the gold leaf, and light oxidation or foxing on the original mirror glass.

Place the mirror above a modern hallway console or fireplace mantelpiece to create a striking focal point, allowing the gilded frame to contrast against clean lines and plain modern walls.
