Provenance - from Anne Parsons, Countess of Rosse (née Messel, previously Armstrong-Jones; 8 February 1902 – 3 July 1992), the collection of the late Anne Parsons, Countess of Rose, (nee Mossel, of Nymans, Sussex, previously Armstrong-Jones)

1902-1992, Mother of Lord Snowdon and Mother-in-Law to HRH Princess Margaret and resident of Womersley Hall Estate, Yorkshire.

Born in London in 1902, Anne Messel was the only daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Leonard Messel and his wife, Maud, the daughter of the celebrated Punch draughtsman, Edward Linley Sambourne. The family’s artistic streak was inherited by Anne’s brother, the leading stage designer Oliver Messel, and her son, the society photographer and filmmaker Antony Armstrong-Jones, later the 1st Earl of Snowdon, who was married to Princess Margaret from 1960-1978.

Originating in eighteenth-century Britain, tripod tilt-top tables were designed for tea drinking and social gatherings. The hinged mechanism allowed the top to tilt vertically when not in use, enabling the table to be stored neatly against the perimeter of a room to maximise floor space.

These tables are primarily constructed from dense timber such as solid mahogany or walnut. Construction features include a central carved pedestal, a brass or iron spring-catch latch underneath the top, and three hand-shaped cabriole legs dovetail-joined to the base of the column.

Authentic period examples display hand-planed marks on the underside of the tabletop, original brass or iron catch hardware, natural wear along the leg knees, and an aged dark patina within the carved crevices that cannot be replicated by modern machine production.

Position the table beside a sofa or armchair as a functional drinks surface, or tilt the tabletop vertically and place it in a room corner or alcove to display the carved timber detailing as decorative woodwork.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year following the natural timber grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
