Pair of 19th Century Lignum Vitae Treen Candlesticks

19th century
Description

A Very Attractive Pair Of Early 19th Century Antique Treen, Lignum Vitae Candlesticks, Of Good Rich Colour And Patina, Having Bulbous Sockets Over Broadening Baluster Stems, Terminating On Stepped Disc Bases.

Antique treen candlesticks are wooden candlesticks, traditionally made from turned wood that can date from throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Often they would be made from whatever wood was to hand, oak, walnut or pine, but lignum vitae was a little more special, and of course therefore more expensive to purchase, due to its exceptional hardness and durability, alongside its decorative features.

This design of treen candlesticks can be found throughout the late 18th and 19th centuries and this pair can be dated to around 1830 based on the design features and wear.

The term "treen" refers to anything made from wood, specifically handmade functional items like candlesticks, bowls, and spoons. These candlesticks were often used for domestic purposes, such as lighting tables or shelves.

As with all items which we offer for sale this pair of antique candlesticks have been inspected and attended to by our specialist antique restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure they are ready for immediate placement within the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Treen refers to small, functional domestic items made entirely from wood. Lignum vitae was particularly favoured for treen candlesticks due to its extreme density, heavy weight, natural self-lubricating oils, and distinctive contrasting dark and golden grain patterns.

These items were turned individually on a lathe using specialized woodturning chisels. The high resin content of lignum vitae allowed turners to create sharp moulding details, smooth baluster stems, and flared sconces without the timber splintering.

Authentic lignum vitae pieces are exceptionally heavy for their size, feeling dense compared to oak or walnut. They display characteristic dark brown to greenish-black heartwood alongside paler sapwood bands, often showing faint hand-lathe turning marks and stable age-related surface checking.

Pairing turned timber candlesticks with contemporary stone surfaces, neutral linen table runners, or minimalist mantelpieces adds organic warmth and tactile historical contrast to contemporary interior schemes.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent cracking. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a thin layer of high-grade beeswax polish annually to nourish the timber and preserve the natural patina.
