Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late 19th century, turned wood candlesticks gained popularity as decorative interior accessories. Craftsmen combined dense hardwoods like mahogany with brass candle cups to protect the timber from heat and wax drippings.

These items were shaped on a lathe using turning tools to create fluted, columned, or barley-twist columns. The timber was then fitted with turned or cast brass sconces at the top and finished with clear varnishes or waxes.

Authentic period examples exhibit subtle hand-turned irregularities, authentic age-related wear on the circular bases, and natural oxidisation on the brass elements. Original weighted bases or lead inserts were also used to provide stability.

Pairing dark wood candlesticks with neutral stone, contemporary ceramics, or minimalist tabletops creates visual contrast. Placing them on a fireplace mantelpiece or dining table adds vertical structure and historical depth.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically to retain the finish. Clean the brass cup separately using specialized brass cleaner, taking care not to touch the surrounding timber with abrasive pastes.
