A Fine Georgian Glazed Corner Cabinet on Stand

19th century
For Sale by Culvertons
Description

In the 35 years I have been trading, I cannot recollect coming across such a beautiful glazed Georgian corner cabinet. Evidently, I am not the only one to think so highly of this piece, because, within the last 60 years, someone commissioned its elegant and sympathetic stand to be made. Together, they make a wonderful interior statement and a perfect vehicle to display a treasured collection. The glazed cabinet has been skilfully lined with ivory coloured moiré silk and edged with a complimentary braid. Its decorative fretted and inlaid swan's neck pediment is original, as are the fine glazing bars which are perfectly positioned to display the items inside. The internal bolts, hinges and locks are all in excellent order, and as you can see from the images, it has is a key with a decorative tassel. As to its overall condition, there are two or three very minor pinpoint sized marks to the internal silk. and as you would expect after two hundred years, there are minor indications of previous restoration to its finely constructed swans neck. The backboards and mahogany faced softwood shelving appear to be original, however, the pigment that would have been applied to the interior to visually blend the softwood to the mahogany has been removed, leaving the underside of the shelves light in colour. This was almost certainly done so as not to conflict with the colour of the silk. The cabinet and stand come in two separate pieces, which will be very helpful for its delivery and positioning. (height of stand - 85 .5 cm).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th century, a Georgian corner cabinet on stand is a triangular furniture piece engineered to fit into room corners. It combines an upper glazed display cupboard with an elevated base, often incorporating architectural details like swan-neck pediments and astragal glazing.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from dense timbers such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, frequently accented with decorative wood inlays like satinwood. The glazed doors incorporated hand-blown crown glass panes supported by intricate wooden astragal glazing bars.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed backboards fitted to 90-degree angles, and irregular thickness in the original glass. Additional indicators include genuine historical wear on the timber base and original brass keyhole escutcheons or hinges.

Position the cabinet in an unutilised corner to maximise floor space and add architectural interest. Contrast the dark mahogany timber by displaying light-coloured porcelain, glass, or curated books on the interior shelves, leaving space around the exterior stand to maintain clean room lines.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent wood shrinkage or timber splitting. Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year, rubbing along the grain.
