Mid-18th-century English School, Portrait of a Girl with a Posy - Antique Oil Painting

18th century
For Sale by Brave Fine Art
Description

This exceedingly charming mid-18th-century English oil painting depicts a girl wearing a red gown with a train over a white petticoat. She’s holding a posy or nosegay.

Evidently once commissioned for an English country house, the identity of this young lady remains a mystery. Her gown appears to be inspired by the popular ‘robe à la française’ but with modifications due to her age. These remained fashionable until around 1770 when replaced by the ‘robe à l'anglaise’. It's accessorized with decorative sleeve ruffles and a pleated train, while her hair is adorned with an intriguing fascinator created from colourful flora and feathers.

Held in a later frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 32” x 39½” / 81cm x 100cm

Year of creation: c. 1740

Provenance: The Estate of David Pike, UK.

Condition: Cleaned. Canvas relined. Fine craquelure throughout. The paint layer is stable. Later stretcher. Frame in good condition with minor age-related wear.

Our reference: BRV2118

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

English School portraiture of the mid-18th century is defined by formal compositions depicting gentry and aristocracy in period costume, often incorporating subtle botanical or symbolic motifs to denote status and youth.

Paintings from this era were created using oil-based pigments derived from natural minerals and organic materials, applied onto hand-stretched linen or canvas surfaces and housed in carved giltwood frames.

Authenticity is evaluated through uniform craquelure patterns, evidence of historical lining or hand-forged tacks, timber stretcher construction, and age-consistent oxidation on the canvas reverse.

A period oil painting can be styled above a clean-lined sideboard or mantelpiece, where the dark background tones and rich frame contrast against modern architectural features.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, heating sources, and sudden humidity fluctuation, dusting the frame lightly with a dry soft-bristled brush without using liquid cleaners.
