Transferware was developed in Staffordshire, England, during the late 18th century as an economical method to replicate hand-painted blue and white Chinese porcelain. Tissue paper prints taken from engraved copper plates were applied to earthenware vessels before glazing and firing.

These items were typically constructed from white or off-white earthenware or ironstone. Cobalt oxide was used for the blue pigment because it remained stable under high firing temperatures beneath a clear lead glaze.

Authentic pieces usually display slight print misalignments or seams in the transfer paper, subtle stippling from hand-engraved copper plates, unglazed foot rims, and maker marks or impressed numbers on the underside.

Plates can be mounted on wall surfaces using wire hangers in a grid or asymmetrical grouping, displayed on wooden plate stands atop sideboards, or arranged within open kitchen dressers.

Hand wash plates gently using warm water and mild liquid soap. Avoid soaking glazed earthenware, abrasive detergents, and dishwashers, as moisture can enter fine glaze crazing and cause discolouration.
