A fine quality mid 19th century inlaid mahogany partners desk with a tan tooled leather inset top.

The desk has graduated drawers to the front and the back, a seating height of 61cm.

Old marks to the leather inset all consistent with age, the condition is very good, working keys for some drawers, all ready for use. Dated around 1850. The desk comes in three parts for moving.

The partners desk originated in Britain during the eighteenth century to accommodate two commercial partners working opposite one another. Designed for banking halls and library spaces, these desks allowed shared access to ledgers and documents across a wide surface.

Desks from this period were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or oak framing, frequently finished with flame mahogany veneers. Drawer linings were typically made of solid oak or pine, fitted with brass handles and gilt-tooled leather writing surfaces.

Authentic pieces feature functional drawers or cupboards on both sides, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, and cast brass hardware. Pedestals often separate into three sections (top and two pedestals) to facilitate transport.
